Verdante will have areas of green roof similar to those at Luminato, seen in these photos. The birds-eye view here shows the shared roof deck with surrounding green roof at the seventh floor in the center of the photo, and individual unit decks with surrounding green roof areas on the sixth floor.

Even the very tops of the elevator shaft and stairway above the 7th floor are topped with a green roof.

Benefits to the community include storm-water management, moderation of the “urban heat island” effect, and improved air quality. Benefits to residents include energy efficiency, fire retardation and noise reduction. Read more about the benefits of a green roof.

“At first, I saw the green roof around my deck as an example of positive urban construction. After living with it for 10 months, I find the atmosphere a pleasant surprise. Watching the plants flower, grow and blow in the wind, and seeing birds grazing through the plant life—it adds greatly to having a peaceful space in the center of a growing city.”

When first installed, the sedum is an even green carpet, but as seasons pass, the different varieties grow with different habits and show various colors.

“Luminato’s green roof is a wonderful place to enjoy Portland from a unique vantage point.  Seeing the plantings change over the seasons only adds to the enjoyment.  And the green roof serves as the building’s storm water system–an added bonus for both Luminato and the city.”

“The Green Roof makes the rooftop terrace an enjoyable place to relax and unwind while being good for the environment at the same time. I enjoy seeing the canvas of plantings in constant flux, blooming and growing throughout the year. Pollinating insects enjoy it as well! I can’t imagine a rooftop space without the green roof.”
